Physics 235, Fall 2004

Office Hours: By appointment only.  It is impossible to find a single time during which everyone is able to come to my office hours.  If I can help you with anything related to the course, please send me an email to set up a time to meet.

TextClassical Dynamics of Particles and Systems, Thornton and Marion (Fifth Edition).  A student solution manual with solutions to about 25% of the problems in the text book can be ordered on-line.

Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9.40 am - 10.55 am, Lattimore 210.

Recitations: Starting September 14, Tuesdays, 2 pm - 3 pm (Hylan 305).  The recitation session will focus on the solutions of the homework sets and exams, and includes a question and answer session about the material discussed in lecture. The recitation instructor is Vladimir Kuznetsov (email: Vladimir will have office hours on Thursdays between 4.30 pm and 6 pm in B&L 478.

Final Grade: The final grade will be the weighted average of:

  1. Final exam (30%)
  2. 2 Mid-term exams (20% each, 40% total)
  3. Homework (20 %)
  4. Final Project (10 %)

Final exam: Saturday December 18, 4 pm 7 pm (location TBA).

Midterm exams: Tuesday October 12, 9.40 am - 10.55 am (Lattimore 210) and Tuesday November 16, 9.40 am - 10.55 am (Lattimore 210).

Homework: Homework will be assigned at the end of each week on Friday, and will be due one week later on Friday at noon.  It must be dropped off in the homework lockers located on the first floor of B&L (across from B&L 106).  The homework will be returned the following Tuesday in recitation.

Final Project: There will be one final project, which is due the last day of classes.  In this project you will need to write a computer program to study the solutions of a classical mechanical system, which is of interest to you.  The programming language to be used for this project is vPython (which is available for free from and runs on both Mac OS X and Windows).  More details about this project will be provided by the end of September.
